The Rev. Gareth C. Evans, Rector
Fr. Evans is the 13th
Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Gareth, 39, was born in Lancashire, England. He is of
Welsh
Protestant and Irish Catholic heritage, and grew up in Southport, a
sedate seaside town just north of the port city of Liverpool. “My
identity has been shaped by distinct religious and cultural influences,” he explains,
“and continues to be shaped by the challenges and opportunities of life in the City of Boston!”
He
attended college in Wales and
afterwards worked for the Episcopal
Church in Egypt and while there, in an orphanage run by Mother Teresa
Sisters. Upon returning to England, he began seminary at
Oxford
in 1993. Ordained in 1996, he served as an assistant priest
in a
large suburban parish in the North-East of England. In the fall of
2000,
he received a scholarship to attend Harvard Divinity School and graduated with
a Master’s degree in 2002. Before joining St. John's, Fr. Evans served
on the staff of St. Peter’s Church in Cambridge and at the Church of the
Messiah, in Auburndale.
He joined St. John’s in September
2004 and has begun his fourth year in the parish. Over the last
three years he has helped shaped congregational life by
encouraging creative partnerships within the Episcopal
diocese and across the community. His style combines British formality
with disarming humor, a blend that finds particular expression in his
preaching. His doctorial studies focus
on
the role of humor in interfaith dialogue and church life. He
was
recently engaged to Ms. Frances Bean, 28, a middle school math teacher
in the
Boston Public Schools. They plan to be married next summer.
