Prayers After Today’s Tragedy at the Marathon

Dear Friends,

Many of us are already praying for all those who died, were injured, or affected in any way by the explosions at the Boston Marathon today. As far as I know, no one from our parish community who was either running or attending was hurt today.

Emily Bryson, who was running in support of the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, is safe and she crossed the finish line before the explosion. I have also received word that Sean Nyhan completed the race safely as well.

But our prayers will continue for those who were hurt, and for all the first responders — the police officers, firefighters, EMT personnel, doctors, nurses, and others who are caring for those suffering.

We are being encouraged by the mayor and governor to stay at home this evening. There will be a service Tuesday evening at St. John’s at 7 pm for those who wish to gather and pray; and the Cathedral Church of St. Paul has announced that there will be a service at 12:15 on Tuesday at the Cathedral (at 138 Tremont Street), assuming that travel in downtown is not restricted.

Tonight, give thanks for all those who are working tirelessly to bring aid and safety to our wounded city and to hurting hearts, and join me in this prayer from the Office of Evening Prayer:

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, sooth the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

Faithfully,

Tom
